There is a particular magic to a patio after sunset. The heat of the day slips away, moths drift between the pots, and scent hangs in the cooler air. Containers can easily become tired by midsummer, but with a little forward planning your pots can keep pumping out fragrance long after dinner has ended — and become a lifeline for nocturnal wildlife.

Why night scent matters

Many fragrant plants have evolved to attract moths and other night-flying insects. Pale flowers — white, cream, soft yellow — reflect moonlight and are easy for pollinators to find in the dark. Their scent is often strongest in the evening, precisely when we are most likely to be sitting outside. In a small garden, containers let you place those plants exactly where you need them: beside a bench, flanking a door, or on a table.

Refresh compost and repot

By July, compost in a busy container has often lost its structure and nutrients. Tip out the top few inches and replace it with fresh, peat-free multi-purpose compost mixed with slow-release fertiliser. For long-term pots, a loam-based compost holds moisture better, though it is heavier to move. If a plant has filled its pot with roots, pot it on into the next size up. Tease out the rootball gently, place it in the new pot with fresh compost around the edges, and water well. This gives late-season flowers such as Nicotiana the room they need to keep blooming into autumn. Even top-dressing alone can revive a flagging display within a week or two.

Water deeply, but at the right time

Containers dry out faster than borders, and a thirsty plant stops producing scent. Deep watering is better than little and often: it encourages roots to grow down rather than lurking at the surface. In warm weather, most patio pots need a thorough soak every day, sometimes twice. The evening is ideal — the water sinks in before the sun returns, and the plants are preparing for their night shift.

Try to water the compost, not the leaves. Wet foliage overnight can encourage disease, and it dilutes the scent you are trying to enjoy. Water in the late afternoon or early evening so any splashes dry before nightfall. A layer of gravel or cocoa shell mulch on top of the compost slows evaporation and keeps the surface tidy. If you are going away, group pots in a shady spot and stand them in a tray of water.

Night-scented flowers for containers

Some plants are made for pots and for evenings. Reliable choices for a UK patio include:

• Night-scented stock (Matthiola longipetala) — sow seeds in spring for a haze of pale flowers and a powerful, sweet perfume after dark. It looks best in wide, shallow bowls.
• Tobacco plant (Nicotiana) — tall, elegant and generous with scent. The white-flowered varieties are the most fragrant.
• Evening primrose (Oenothera) — bright yellow flowers that open in the evening and glow under moonlight. It prefers a sunny, well-drained pot.
• Common jasmine (Jasminum officinale) — a climber for a trellis behind a pot. Its white stars scent the whole patio on warm nights.
• Lavender — its oils release scent in the warmth of early evening. It also feeds bees and moths.

Mix in night-scented herbs such as lemon balm or mint — brush past them and the aroma rises. Avoid deadheading every flower: seed heads feed birds later in the year.

Make your pots a haven for evening wildlife

A wildlife-friendly evening garden is not just about scent. Moths, bats, hedgehogs and lacewings benefit from a few thoughtful touches. Choose single, open flowers rather than double blooms, so nectar and pollen are accessible. Avoid pesticides entirely. Add a shallow dish of water at ground level for hedgehogs and birds, with a few pebbles as landing pads. A small log pile or bundle of hollow canes gives insects shelter. Bats will hunt moths above your pots, so resist lighting the patio brightly — a warm, low-level glow is far friendlier than a harsh floodlight. Deadhead sparingly and leave some seed heads standing; evening primrose and night-scented stock will often self-seed.

Once your pots are refreshed, watered and planted, the rest is about enjoying them. Step outside just after sunset with a cup of tea or a glass of something cold. Feel the temperature drop, listen for the first bats, and watch the pale flowers float in the gloom. On very still nights, scent can hang heavily; if yours is faint, check that the compost is not bone dry and that plants are not crammed against a wall. A gentle breeze carries fragrance further, so leave a gap between pots. Finally, do not worry about perfection. A few nibbled leaves and a ragged seed head are signs of a garden working for wildlife.
