Why Sow Indoors by the Moon?

Moonlit gardening is less about magic and more about rhythm. The idea is simple: the moon gives you a ready-made calendar for splitting your sowing into manageable batches, and a windowsill gives you a controlled place to act on it. For UK growers, that combination is genuinely useful. Outdoor conditions swing wildly in March and April — a warm Tuesday can be followed by frost and hail by the weekend — but a south-facing windowsill stays comparatively steady. Tender herbs such as basil, coriander and dill, plus half-hardy flowers like cosmos, nicotiana and tagetes, all benefit from an early indoor start.

You do not need to believe the moon controls sap flow to use lunar phases as an organising tool. Treat them as prompts: a fortnightly nudge to sow, then a fortnightly nudge to check, prick out and pot on. That structure keeps you from sowing everything in one frantic weekend and ending up with forty identical seedlings and nowhere to put them.

The Phases and What to Sow

The lunar cycle runs roughly 29.5 days, and traditional practice divides it into four quarters. For indoor sowing, the practical split looks like this:

• New moon to first quarter (waxing crescent): sow leafy crops and herbs grown for their foliage — basil, parsley, chervil, rocket, lettuce. These are the batches you want germinating fast and growing steadily.
• First quarter to full moon: the strongest waxing period. Sow flowering annuals and anything you want to put on vigorous top growth — cosmos, sweet peas, calendula, nicotiana.
• Full moon to last quarter: shift from sowing to maintenance. Prick out seedlings, pot on, feed lightly, and take softwood cuttings of tender herbs like mint and lemon verbena.
• Last quarter to new moon: a rest and review window. Clean trays, sort seeds, note what germinated and what failed, and plan the next batch.

If a phase falls on a day you cannot sow, sow within two or three days. The point is batching and observation, not superstition.

Setting Up Your Windowsill

Light is the limiting factor indoors, and a north-facing sill will produce pale, stretched seedlings whatever the moon is doing. Aim for a south or west-facing window that gets at least six hours of decent light, and turn trays by a quarter turn every day or two so stems grow straight rather than leaning.

Use small modules or 7cm pots filled with peat-free multipurpose compost, sown thinly. Most tender herbs germinate best at 18–21°C; a kitchen windowsill above a radiator is often ideal, though once seedlings are up, move them somewhere slightly cooler to keep growth compact. Water from below with a tray, letting the compost drain fully, because damping off — that collapsing, pinched-off look at the base of the stem — is the main killer of windowsill sowings. Label everything with the sowing date and the moon phase. That single habit turns a vague experiment into real data you can compare year on year.

Night-Scented Plants to Sow for the Evening Garden

Evening gardens work on scent and pale colour, because after dusk the eye gives way to the nose. Sow these indoors and plant them out once the frost risk has passed:

• Nicotiana (tobacco plant) — tall, pale, intensely fragrant after sunset. Sow on a warm windowsill in March or April.
• Night-scented stock (Matthiola longipetala) — small, unassuming flowers with a powerful clove-and-vanilla scent. Fast from seed; sow in succession.
• Evening primrose (Oenothera) — yellow blooms that open in the evening and glow against dusk.
• Sweet rocket (Hesperis matronalis) — violet or white, heavily scented at night, and a favourite of moths.
• Tender herbs — basil, dill and coriander flower in mid-summer if you let them, and their blooms feed late-flying insects.

Group these near a bench or open window so the scent drifts indoors. A pot of nicotiana by the back door does more for a summer evening than almost anything else you can grow.

Making It Wildlife-Friendly After Dark

A moonlit garden is a functioning habitat, not just a pretty view. Moths, bats and nocturnal beetles all use it, and your windowsill seedlings can feed straight into that. Plant out your night-scented flowers in generous drifts rather than single specimens, because moths find scent plumes more easily when the source is concentrated.

Add a shallow water dish at ground level for hedgehogs and thirsty insects, and leave a corner of long grass or a small log pile undisturbed. Avoid garden chemicals, and let a few herbs bolt to flower. If you have space, a native honeysuckle or jasmine near the seating area extends the scent season beyond your annuals.

Keep a simple notebook: sowing date, moon phase, germination date, and how the plants performed in the evening garden. After a season or two you will have your own local rhythm — one that owes as much to your windowsill, your compost and your patience as it does to the moon overhead.
