Why the Evening Garden Smells Stronger

Scent behaves differently after sunset. As the ground cools, warm air rises from paths, walls and paving, and the gentler air currents of evening carry fragrance low and close to where you are sitting. For many climbers this is not an accident of timing but a strategy: night-flying moths do the pollinating, so the plants have evolved to advertise themselves in the dark. The result is a garden that feels like two different places — bright and busy at noon, quiet and intensely perfumed at ten o'clock on a July night.

If you only do one thing to improve your evening garden, put a strongly scented climber within reaching distance of a bench, a dining table or a doorway that stays open on warm evenings. Jasmine and honeysuckle are the obvious choices, and they earn that reputation.

Jasmine and Honeysuckle: Picking the Right Ones

Not every jasmine smells. Jasminum officinale, the common white summer jasmine, is the one to grow for evening perfume; it flowers from midsummer into autumn on a twining climber that copes with most UK gardens. Jasminum beesianum offers pink-red flowers slightly earlier in the season and a lighter scent, useful for a north-facing wall.

For honeysuckle, stick with our native Lonicera periclymenum and its cultivars. 'Serotina' flowers later than the species, often into September, and is particularly rich in the evening. 'Graham Thomas' is another reliable, heavily scented form with creamy yellow and white blooms. What you want to avoid is the one that gives honeysuckle a bad name: Lonicera japonica, Japanese honeysuckle. It is vigorous to the point of thuggish and can smother smaller plants; if you inherit one, keep it hard pruned or replace it.

Training Around Seating Without Swallowing the Bench

A pergola, arch or simple pair of sturdy posts with wires between them will hold either climber, and it lets you place the flowers exactly where you want them: at head height, just behind the bench, close enough that you catch the scent without burying your face in foliage.

Plant in autumn or early spring, about 30–45cm out from the base of the support, and lean the stems in towards it. Both jasmine and honeysuckle prefer a reasonably fertile, well-drained soil. Improve heavy clay with garden compost and a handful of grit, and water regularly through the first two summers — a climber that dries out in its first year will sulk for several more.

Training is straightforward. Tie the main stems in with soft twine, spacing them fan-like rather than letting them bunch, and pinch out the tips of jasmine to encourage sideshoots that carry more flowers. Prune honeysuckle lightly after flowering, removing only the oldest tangled growth, and thin jasmine in early spring. Resist the urge to let either climber sprawl over the seat itself; a light canopy overhead gives dappled shade and releases scent downwards, while a dense curtain simply blocks the view and collects earwigs.

Choosing Plants for Moths and Bats

Scent is only half of a wildlife-friendly evening garden. The insects drawn by that perfume are food for bats, and pale flowers are far easier for moths to find in low light. Add a few of the following around your seating area:

• Evening primrose (Oenothera) — lemon-yellow flowers that open visibly in the late afternoon
• Night-scented stock (Matthiola) — undemanding, cheap from seed, and almost overwhelming in a pot by the door
• Tobacco plant (Nicotiana) — tall, white, tubular flowers made for moth tongues
• Phacelia — an easy annual that hums with insects and self-seeds politely
• Buddleja — still the best single shrub for butterflies by day, and moths by night

Leave a little untidiness at the boundaries: seed heads standing through winter, a log pile, leaf litter under the hedge. Bats need the insects that these habitats shelter, and they will hunt happily over a garden that keeps its lights low.

Light, Colour and a Place to Sit

Bright garden lighting ruins an evening garden. It flattens the dusk, confuses moths and bats, and washes the mystery out of the whole thing. Use low, warm-white or amber lights instead — a few uplighters at the base of a tree, a solar lantern on the path, a candle on the table — and aim them at the ground or a wall rather than across the borders.

For colour after dark, rely on white and pale cream: white roses, shasta daisies, white cosmos, silver-leaved plants such as artemisia or Stachys byzantina. These catch what light remains and glow faintly under a moon. Grouping them near the climber is simpler and more effective than scattering them about.

An Evening Routine That Keeps It Working

The scented hours are short, roughly from dusk until the air cools fully, so a little routine pays off. Water in the early evening in dry spells — damp soil releases more fragrance than parched ground, and the plants will thank you. Keep a pair of secateurs handy to snip out finished flowers, and tie in new growth every few weeks through summer so the climber stays where you intended.

Then simply sit out. Take a mug of tea or a glass of something cold to the bench, wait for the light to go, and let the jasmine and honeysuckle do the rest.
